Five small thrusters on the bottom deck propel the spacecraft during orbital maneuvers. TESS requires a unique orbit that maximizes the amount of sky the spacecraft can image, allowing its cameras to safely monitor their targets continuously from a stable orbit. The thrusters are also used for occasional “momentum unloading” operations, which occur when angular momentum builds up as a result of solar radiation pressure.
