In March 2016 NASA’s Astrophysics Division approved the planning of a focused starshade technology development activity managed by the Exoplanet Exploration Program Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

+ more

The first year of this activity will be focused on technology development planning, culminating in gate reviews to be held during the fourth quarter of FY17. If approved, subsequent years would then focus on developing starshade technology to TRL 5. NASA will make no decision on conducting a starshade mission until after the 2020 Decadal Survey.

The goal of this Starshade Technology Workshop is to provide a forum for the broad community of starshade stakeholders to offer input and influence the formulation of a starshade technology development plan (STDP) that would guide technology maturation and investments under the activity.

To achieve this goal, the workshop will begin with presentations that will provide background information and summarize current plans for this coming year. These will be followed by a series of short, voluntary presentations from the community on recent technical progress, future needs, and opportunities. After the presentations, break-out groups in the three main technology areas of Starlight Suppression, Deployment Accuracy and Shape Stability, and Formation Sensing and Control will develop and prioritize lists of trades that need to be conducted in the following months along with potential metrics for evaluation. The information gathered in this workshop will form the basis of future technology development plans in preparation for a NASA review later in 2017.

We encourage you to consider participating in this workshop, and ask that you pass this invitation on to other individuals you believe could provide valuable input to the STDP. We will be setting up an open registration website soon on this page, along with providing logistical details about the venue and agenda. While remote participation will be possible, we strongly encourage on-site participation due to the interactive nature of the breakout groups.

We are looking forward to hearing from you and getting the starshade technology development activities started on the best path forward with your insight and feedback.
